When tots socialize

Around the time he turns 2, your toddler will start to actively reach out to other children. But as with any other skill, he learns how to socialize with others by trial and error.

Reading tip

Ensure literacy at an early age, make sure that books are visible and at the child’s level.

Playing with toys

Your little one may still enjoy many of her older toys, but don’t be surprised if she starts using them in more sophisticated ways, i.e., stacking blocks into a tower instead of just banging them together.

When preschoolers understand the past and future

Preschoolers learn the difference between reality and fantasy. By the end of the preschool years, your child will have a better understanding of past, present and future.

Common early childhood terms

Knowing the difference between other common early childhood terms will help you make informed decisions regarding your child’s education. Review this list of common terms to describe preschool settings.

Allergy symptoms

You can suspect allergies if your child has symptoms after being around a specific indoor allergy trigger. These allergy symptoms usually include a runny nose, stuffy nose, sneezing, and red eyes.

Fear of the dark

Most children are afraid of the dark on some level — it’s a very common fear of the unknown. To combat this fear, try teaching your child how to turn on lights around the house, and add a night-light to his bedroom.

Variety of colored foods

Toddlers will notoriously put unusual bite sized objects in their mouths whether they are edible or not. So they are more likely to graze if confronted with a variety of different colored and shaped foods.

Magnet danger

Watch carefully for loose magnets. If more than one is swallowed, they can attract each other in the body and cause serious injury or even death.

No shots for kids

There are old wives tales about giving babies a shot of brandy to help them through teething, but this is dangerous, and poisonous to them.

Activity Tip: Cardboard boxes

Find some cardboard boxes. They’re still the best toys on earth. Get a big box and help toddler draw on car doors or rocket ship panels, make a puppet show stage, cut out a door and windows for houses, you name it.

Enthusiasm is crucial

When playing with your child your enthusiasm is crucial. If you are not interested in a toy or activity, then he’ll think that it isn’t interesting or fun either.

Toddler snacks

Offer breakfast, lunch and supper with a healthy snack mid morning and another mid afternoon helping to provide the energy and nutrition your toddler needs during the day.

Chilled water treat

A jug of chilled water in the fridge with slices of lemon or a sprig of mint tastes good. Freeze small pieces of chopped fruit in ice blocks and add to his water.

Review Your Child’s Social Skills.

Your little one doesn’t have to be the next Emily Post, but she should have a basic grasp of how to behave in public. From using the restroom on her own to knowing to say “please” and “thank you” there are some practical skills that your preschooler should have mastered by now, or at least possess a basic understanding.

Pipe cleaner activity

Pack a new bag of multi colored pipe cleaners (about $1 or so) and let their creativity run wild. They can make letters, flowers, animals, chains, jewelry, twist ties in their hair, practice braiding, and by the end, just balls of many colors.

Determining choking hazards

Children can choke on small things. If something is small enough to fit in a toilet paper tube, it is not safe for little children.

Do as I do

When you read newspapers and write letters, you show your young child how reading and writing are useful. By demonstrating why reading and writing are important, you will motivate your child to become a reader and writer.

Limiting play dates

Unless you relish the idea of a pair of hyper toddlers trashing your entire house, limit the domain of play dates. You can either gate off a single room or simply shut doors to rooms that are off-limits.

Putting tots in charge

Putting your preschooler in charge of a regular, simple task will build her confidence and sense of competency.
