Babies do not develop at the same rate. There is a wide range of what is considered “normal”. Your baby may be ahead in some areas and slightly behind in others. Toddlers live in a short time frame. The upside of this is that toddlers don’t bear grudges. The downside is that they won’t remember that they were “out-of-control” earlier when Dad comes home. Moms commonly lament that little children grow up so fast. It is impossible to truly appreciate each milestone as it happens. This is why baby books tracking a baby as he or she grows are so popular. When walking, talk to your child about street safety. Show him/her how to stop at the edge of the street and look for cars. Families function at their best when there are predictable routines in their day to day lives. By the end of the first year, your child may be well onto the cup and off the bottle. Introducing a cup should be done slowly. Start by giving water or juice in a cup. A wonderful activity to do with toddlers is to blow bubbles. You can purchase bubble mix at any store or you can make your own. Be the boss and don’t be ashamed of being the boss in your relationship with your child. If you are not the boss, they will step into the power vacuum and this may have long term negative consequences. While preparing the Thanksgiving meal, let the kids choose a few of their favorite movies to watch while everyone is busy. Be sure to have some snacks readily available. For Baby’s First Turkey Dinner, run a little bit of turkey and sweet potatoes or squash through a food mill. Mix the turkey blend with applesauce until the desired consistency is reached. If your baby is old enough, add a little cranberry sauce to the mix. Encourage everyone to get involved in setting up the holiday spread and take pride in creating a beautiful display. Ask kids to contribute to Thanksgiving table decor. Get ready for the Thanksgiving season and make Turkey-Shaped Rice Crispy Treats. On Thanksgiving, feed the kids first! The last thing you want is to have to get up constantly while you are eating to supervise. Make the kids feel special and ask for their help setting the dinner table for Thanksgiving. This will give them a role to play in the festivities and keep them occupied. The transition to the new childcare setting may go more smoothly if you can take it in small steps. If possible, consider bringing your child in for an hour or two the first time. Toddlers are often used to their normal bedtime routine and may have difficulty sleeping in a new place. Don’t be afraid to bring a port-a-crib if you have room for it. When traveling, don’t forget that airport security is going to want to see any liquids in your bag. Paying enough attention to your child and making sure your toddler receives adequate stimulation during the time he or she is awake is also vitally important for avoiding bedtime showdowns. Classic signs and symptoms of teething often include drooling, crankiness, swollen gums, and chewing on solid objects. For toddlers, the age of the other children at the playdate doesn’t really matter. Most kids will find some value in spending time with another child even if their ages don’t match up perfectly. |
