You’re the best person to gauge your child’s speech development. If you feel concerned, it’s a good idea to discuss the possibility of a language delay or hearing problem with your child’s doctor. At some point during your toddler’s 2nd year, he’ll go from taking 2 naps to 1 and during his 3rd year, he’ll give up that nap, too. Toddlers that are allowed to carry their bottle or sippy cup of milk around all day can actually over drink. Generally, an infant cries when he/she is hungry or unable to sleep. However, if the baby cries for longer hours continuously, probably he/she is suffering from some ailment. Between 2-3 years, toddlers learn how to jump off low structures, and eventually how to jump from a standing position. Both of these skills require bilateral coordination, or the ability to use both sides of your body to do something different. Coconut milk is not really milk and doesn’t provide the same nourishment as normal milks. It contains a lot of fat and provides little else of value to the diet and cannot be used to replace other milks. At 2 1/2 concentration and attention span is growing, although it is still fairly short. This means your child can easily become absorbed in the activity at hand and not remember simple things, like forgetting to take a potty break. For something new and different, why not use your child’s own toy plates for dishing out a snack? Kids enjoy the unexpected. Think about something that you wish you could have done when you were a child. Start having fun with it and your child will watch and want to join in. Because there is such a wide range of normal ages for beginning to talk, it’s actually more useful to pay attention to how well your baby understands what you say to him. By 14-15 months, most toddlers will follow at least one verbal command, without any visual cues. At his 1st birthday, your child will likely use 1-5 words meaningfully. By 14 mos, that working vocabulary may grow to 7 real words, though he may have 20 words. Anxiety is a normal part of children’s development. Almost all children feel shy or fearful around strangers. But about one in 10 children experience anxiety more intensely and more often than other children. As a baby, your child probably napped 2-3 times a day, but now that she’s a toddler, she’s going to move gradually to 1 nap. The first and most important rule is this: Never, ever leave your baby unsupervised, even for a minute. Children can drown in less than an inch of water. When deciding on the milk to give your child follow these guidelines: Give full cream milk to children between 1 and 2 years of age. Whole milk has 4% fat. Children over 2 years of age do not need full cream milk. Give your child a break. He’s not going to behave perfectly all the time. Don’t nag at every little thing. Concentrate on the big stuff (the toddler behavior you find unacceptable) and get that right. Many parents are lucky to have built-in playmates for their children through neighbors & friends. Others have to search them out. Local parenting support groups, churches, childcares, and other social organizations are good places to look. Two hours is the magic number when it comes to playdates. That’s just enough time to play, have a snack, take a break, and play again, before wrapping things up. Remember when choosing activities for toddlers to keep it simple. Toddlers love activities such as playing with empty cereal or refrigerator or stove boxes to make play houses and castles. Growth slows down in a child’s second year. This means toddlers often have smaller appetites and need less food. |
